General Information

Situated at one of the most important crossroad for the world, Singapore is truly a place where East and West come together. The Republic’s geographical location has long been instrumental in Singapore’s growth as an important centre in trade, tourism and communications.

Travel Documents

Visitors need to satisfy the following requirements before they are allowed to enter Singapore:

·        Passport valid for at least 6 months

·        Confirmed onward/return tickets

·        Sufficient fund to maintain themselves during their stay in Singapore

·        Visa, if applicable

Currency

Currency is in Singapore cents and dollars (US$ 1.00 = Approximately S$ 1.80).

Notes come indenominations of S$ 2.00, S$ 5.00, S$ 10.00, S$ 20.00, S$ 50.00, S$ 100.00, S$ 500.00, S$ 1,000.00 and S$ 10,000.00. Coins come in denominations of 5 cents, 10 cents, 20 cents, 50 cents and S$ 1.

Climate

Singapore has a tropical, hot and humid climate throughout the year. Temperatures reach a maximum of 32-33 °C during the day, falling to a pleasant 23-25 °C during the evening. Rainfall is abundant during the Northeast monsoon season from November to January. Much of the rain falls in sudden showers.

What to wear

Light and summer clothing made from natural fabrics like cotton is best for everyday wear. Casual dress is acceptable for most situations and occasions but some establishments may require a more formal dress code. It is always advisable to check beforehand on dress regulations, if any.

Population and Languages

In Singapore, you will find Chinese, Indian, Malay and Eurasian Communities living harmoniously together, their long established cultures forming a unique backdrop to a clean and modern garden city.

There are four official languages: English, Malay, Mandarin and Tamil. English is spoken everywhere and it is the common business language of all.

Smoking

Smoking is prohibited in public areas such as lifts, theatres, cinemas, air-conditioned restaurants and shopping malls, governments office, and on public transport. It is permissible at most pubs, discos and lounges.

Transportation

• MRT

The Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) is extremely fast. It operates from 5.15 a.m. to 12.49 a.m. with a train arriving every few minutes. Fares range from 80 cents to S$ 2.80. Each station provides coin operated ticket dispensers for single trips. Stored value card (S$ 12.00) can be purchased from the ticket counter. This pass can be used on all city bus services.

• Buses

Exact fares are required, range between 60 cents and S$ 1.60. A Tourist Day Ticket (TDT) priced at S$ 10.00 allows up to 12 rides a day on bus, MRT and LRT regardless of distance traveled. The TDT is available at Translink ticket sales offices. You can also check with the bus driver regarding the bus charges to your destination.

• Taxis

All taxis are metered and flag fare is S$ 2.40 for the first kilometre. Additional charges include trip from Changi International Airport, advanced telephone booking, trip between midnight and 6 a.m., peak hour travelling, and travelling into the Central Business District. Tips are not expected by the taxi drivers.

Customs

Duty-free for 1 litre of liquor, wine and beer for visitors aged 18 years and above who arrive from country other than Malaysia. There are no concessions on cigarettes and other tobacco products. Prohibited items include: explosives, firearms, pornographic materials and controlled drugs. Drug trafficking carries a mandatory death penalty.
